RIP🙏 German legend Gerd Muller passed away at 75 years old

The former striker was regarded as one of the greatest ever forwards to play the game and helped his country to the 1974 FIFA World Cup and 1972 Euros title.

Muller was also Bayern Munich’s all-time record goalscorer with 563 goals in 605 Bundesliga appearances and was known for his clinical finishing inside the penalty box.

The former footballer was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2015 when he was a coach of Bayern’s second team, while he also suffered from alcoholism when his playing days ended in 1982.

In an emotional Twitter post, Bayern Munich said: ‘Today the world of FC Bayern stands still. The all-time record German champions and its entire fan base mourn Gerd Müller, who died early on Sunday morning at the age of 75.’

Speaking about his passing, Bayern president Herbert Hainer added: ‘Today is a sad, black day for FC Bayern and all of its fans. Gerd Müller was the greatest striker there has ever been – and a fine person, a personality in world football.

‘We are united in deep sorrow with his wife Uschi and his family. Without Gerd Müller, FC Bayern would not be the club we all love today. His name and the memory of him will live on forever.’

Bayern’s chief executive Oliver Kahn said in a statement: ‘The news of Gerd Müller’s death affects us all deeply.

‘He is one of the greatest legends in the history of FC Bayern, his achievements are unmatched to this day and will forever be part of the great history of FC Bayern and all of German football.

‘As a player and as a person, Gerd Müller stands like no other for FC Bayern and its development into one of the largest clubs in the world. Gerd will be in our hearts forever.’

Real Madrid transfer news: Spanish giants preparing offer for Kylian Mbappe

Real Madrid have not given up hope of landing Kylian Mbappe this summer, according to reports.

PSG completed the signing of Lionel Messi from last week after Barcelona admitted defeat in their attempt to keep hold of their greatest ever player.

Messi is the fourth player to have arrived at the Parc des Princes on a free transfer this summer, after Sergio Ramos, Gini Wijnaldum and Gigio Donnarumma.

The Argentina international looks set to form a star-studded attack alongside Neymar and Mbappe.

PSG hope that the arrival of Messi will help to convince the Frenchman to commit his future to the club.

Mbappe is out of contract next summer and has yet to agree fresh terms with PSG, provoking speculation that he is looking for a way out.

Real Madrid are thought to be at the front of the queue to sign him, and one report suggests they may yet try to do so before the transfer window closes at the end of this month.

Cadena SER writes that the Spanish giants are weighing up a £102m bid for the 22-year-old.

Mbappe’s representatives expect the youngster to make a decision on his future on Monday.

The former Monaco forward was booed by a section of PSG supporters during Saturday’s 4-2 victory over Strasbourg.

Mbappe scored the second goal as PSG registered their second win of the Ligue 1 campaign.

It is worth taking these rumours with a pinch of salt, however. Real Madrid are known to have financial issues, and it is doubtful that they would be able to afford a £100m fee this summer.

PSG, moreover, have continued to insist that Mbappe is not for sale. Losing the World Cup winner, who is widely considered as a future Ballon d’Or winner, would take the gloss off the Messi signing.

Things could be very different next summer, though. Madrid hope that their history and prestige will appeal to Mbappe, who could be available on a free transfer.

Man Utd outcast Phil Jones ‘REFUSED’ to let Raphael Varane wear his No. 4 shirt

Phil Jones turned a deaf ear to Raphael Varane’s request for his No 4 shirt, as the Old Trafford outcast was pushed further down the pecking order by the star’s Manchester United move.

Varane was unveiled to his expectant new Red Devils fans ahead of kick-off on Saturday, as Bruno Fernandes and Co got the old ground rocking with a 5-1 thrashing of Leeds.

The £42m Frenchman enjoyed the perfect introduction to Manchester and aims to replace Victor Lindelof alongside Harry Maguire in the coming games – and will wear the No 19 shirt when he does.

Varane asked United for No 4 – which he also wears for France – as their negotiations reached the late stages but Jones flat-out refused, according to MEN.

Jones has held the No 4, formerly worn by Steve Bruce, since arriving from Blackburn in 2011, but the 29-year-old hasn’t played for United in more than 18 months.

The centre-back endured a horrific 2018-19 season and was frozen-out by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The club still haven’t managed to drum-up interest in the player for a sale this summer, with his contract expiring in 2023.

Varane will likely inherit Jones’ shirt when United eventually managed to shift the fallen star Sir Alex Ferguson once said ‘could be our greatest player ever.’

The World Cup winner also wore 19 on his back during his first season with Real Madrid in 2011 as a young talent, having joined from Lens despite interest from United boss Ferguson.

He donned No 2 from 2012 to 2016 before finally settling on five. The No 4 shirt was reserved for Bernabeu icon Sergio Ramos during Varane’s stint in Spain, and he hoped to finally wear it in England.

Varane will have been impressed by his new club on Saturday, as he watched a searing 5-1 victory inspired by Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.

The Portuguese star struck a hat-trick while Varane’s international team-mate Pogba racked-up four assists as Old Trafford welcomed back a full house of supporters.
